Olsen constructs three chairs, each corresponding to the Superego, Ego and Id, respectively.
Precedent (throne) is modelled after a common household dining chair, which has then been elongated and burnt black. Its symmetrical, geometric design alludes to a universal aesthetic beauty; however, this is subverted through the seat’s inaccessible height. By exaggerating the ordinary, Olsen reveals otherwise overlooked agendas.
That Tender Place (rocking chair) is an aluminium cot upholstered in white feathers balanced upon two curved, polished steel blades. As a body sat within is warmed and held by the insulating upholstery, it must contend with its complicity in the activation of the blades below. A conflicting relationship between pleasure and pain is implied through the disparity of weight, texture and fragility.
Fuck Machine (armchair) is a pink velour cushion embellished with veins, hair and blemishes that has been squeezed within an acrylic cube mounted on short, steel feet. The amorphous cushion, while confined, pushes against the transparent surface of the acrylic, exposing its abject features. Through hand-making, Olsen produces a metaphorical body, opposing heterosexual dogma.
